HQ laid off its 25 staff, confirmed by  a note acquired by CNN reporter Kerry Flynn in which CEO and founder Rus Yusupov claimed a last minute acquisition deal fell through. HQ’s co-founder Colin Kroll died of an accidental drug overdose in 2018.

The app broadcast one final competitive round on 16 February with both hosts drunkenly yelling and swearing at each other and the chat feed, as reported by TechCrunch. Former US host of HQ Trivia and its undeniable best asset Scott Rogowsky tweeted a harsh assessment of HQ’s demise:

Rogowsky used his fame to jump ship early and now has a job as a broadcaster for Major League Baseball.

HQ Trivia launched in October 2017 and at its peak brought in 2.3 million concurrent players.
